Oh how I love.....A good Quote

Like so many women my age, we are all coming to a point in our early 20's where we are beginning to embrace a lot of aspects of our lives and attaching meaning to it....

I guess you could say, we are beginning to embrace what it means to be young, single, black and female......

I heard this quote the other day...well, its a rather famous quote, I'm just late in the game on hearing it.....found it to be a great quote to live by as you begin to embrace the "you", you never knew you were.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” ~Marianne Williamson~

NICE...........

Nice..........

I say this word often when I watch sports

I say this word when someone says something compelling

I say this word when I really, really like something, when something gives me life.......

So, I came to the conclusion yesterday that this is really all I think I need from someone I like, or I am dating.......niceness.......

I really don't think I can live without that...its a quality that has to be present.......

Seriously, I think about what I am looking for..........Think about what you are looking for....

All I need from someone is for them to own the element of : "nice"

If someone is extremely....kind...sweet...respectful.....I think I could or can overlook a number of things.....the superficial things

When someone is so nice to you...like genuinely warm towards you.......and its authentic......I don't think I could really ask for more.....

I can't live without that......

That's really it.....I think all I need is someone to be nice and I am good...........

Cheers to that.....tap glasses to that.....just be nice.....to me.......

Beyond The Fog

I was talking to one of my friends yesterday about a concept called "Fog of War".Fog of War can mean several different things. In football terms, fog of war means exaggeration. Things look bigger and more exaggerated when action is taking place......Better said, its like when you try and see things through fog....everything on the other side seems so scary, unfamiliar, fear is heighten.

My friend and I talked about the fear of the unknown......and a valid point was made...He said people aren't scared of the dark. People are scared of what's in the dark that they can't see......

I'm going somewhere with this........work with me here........

I think leaping into the unknown is what makes you grow.

Step outside your box....outside your comfort zone.

I've been doing that a lot lately.....stepping into the fog....

Is it really worth it?

I think it depends....I think everyone wants validation when they make that leap.......

You want someone to acknowledge your effort and to realize how hard it is for you to make that choice.....to come outside of what makes you comfortable.

The fog can be mentally blinding....and can present so much anxiety...

Here is a question:

Say you were standing in the middle of the street, and fog went across the street...not allowing you to see what's on the other half of the street in front of you. Would you bust through? Would you say, forget that, I'm going to walk through, I want to know whats on the other side. Or would you say, never that, I'm gone, there's no telling what's out there.

I'm busting through....because no matter what, from here on out, I never want to ask myself what if......and yes, that's really worth it.

Friends....Im Finally writing again, I got some inspiration.

So, you guys can quit worrying about me...I'm blogging.

This is written in the old school, chopped up sentences, sort of poetic justice style.........
Love yall!

~Domi Christin

22....about to be 23.
Never Really opened up in my life. Ever. To anyone.
Until Recently.
Met Someone. Scared me.

He has that type of physical beauty that your momma told you existed. And you looked at her like she was crazy, thinking your momma was talking that old school myth again. Telling her that the true beauty, the kind you see on your television screen, doesn't exist. Nobody could ever be that beautiful.

Ok. I saw it for myself.
That kind of cuteness doesn't just exist in television...its right here in po-dunk, southern, small town VA.
I met him.
That kind of swagger that just makes you quiet yourself, get still, so you can take in the brilliance of whats sitting across from you.

I sat with him.
And I took in for a second, what it looks like to deal with a dude who has been raised well.

I took in what a dude looks like when he has manners.
When he is polite.
When he knows how to tip.
When he remembers the waitors name.

Seriously taken aback.
I wanted to pretend he wasn't decent.
Its safer that way.

But I didn't.

For a sec, for the night, I let go of being Dominique. ( I know, hard to believe)

I opened up.
Had a ball.
Met knew people.
Made Potential new friends.
Danced a little...( I know, your telling yourself, Dominique doesn't dance)
Nervous as Hell....I was...palms sweating.
I don't get nervous ever.

Did the ultimate no-no....might have blown up the phone number just a tad.
But I was So confused. What could I do?
It disappeared. He disappeared.
The "it" being...that good feeling you get when you like chillin' with someone...its in the pit of your stomach.

I wanted to pretend, remember?
I wanted to pretend I didn't have a good time.

Can't fake what a good time it was.

Did I mention I blew his phone up?

So, what do we do as women when they disappear?
We ask too many damn questions of ourselves:
Did I do something wrong?
Did I say something bad?

I just don't know why we retort to this tactic: Questioning.

I'm a Virgo- so I do it ten times more than the next woman.
I had to pull back.
Stop asking questions.
Stop calling.

So, its Monday.
I didn't call yesterday.

Next time, please remind me.......to not open up.

Please.

Let's Dish about makeup!

That's right, we're back after a long hiatus away from the blogger world. " What a diva knows for sure" is ready to finish out the year and bring everyone into the new year with style and class with the best reviews on makeup. Covergirl Eva Pigford, and "umbrella" phenom Rihanna represent some of the best makeup around. How can we go into 2008 looking like Eva and Rihanna without spending millions? I brought in a fellow blogger friend of mine by the name of Sheri, and she is the quintessential "diva" when it comes to knowing about trends and great prices with makeup. We are ready to divulge the good, the bad and definitely the overpriced!

What worked and didn't work in 2007?
Makeup in Review :

Let's talk about foundation Queen Style:

Queen Latifah is not only an actress and music mogul but she is also a spokesperson for Covergirl cosmetics. Now, with her own line "The Queen Collection", Queen Latifah is representing by bringing out great shades and tones for all women of color. It is often hard for women of color to find the right foundation to match their skin tone, so we wanted to this foundation that pertained to darker complexions.

Queen Collection-Powder Foundation

Price: $8.69

Good: It runs for a great price and can be found at any Walmart or Walgreens stores. It's a powdery/creamy substance but your finishing look will not look dry. Also with a powdery substance, it doesn't make a mess or get on your clothes or worse someone else's fresh white collar shirt! There are over 9 shades of foundation to choose from! Its very light and airy, doesn't look too heavy. You are sure to find the right shade for your skin tone. It runs for a great price and can be found at any Walmart, Target or Walgreens drug store near you. Fabulous!

Bad: Doesn't control oil in your "T" zone very well. Stores often run out of Queen collection products, so you might have to resort to buying online.

Bottom Line: It's a great product, great positive campaign and it helps women of color eliminate the battle with bad foundation.

It's all about the Mac

Price: $26.50

Jersey Girls Leslie and Nicole
Wearing Mac

Good: Mac just makes everyone look their best. You definitely pay for what you get- a fabulous face! Mac's mineralize and satin finish foundation has vitamins A,C, and E. With this foundation also comes Spf 15 to protect the skin from sun damage. Mac Mineralize and satin finish foundation last for a very long time!

Bad: Too pricey and not enough product. If I am paying almost $27 for a foundation, I would like to get a little more liquid. Mac foundation can also be a tad messy. If you live in the Hampton Roads area, the only location to buy mac is in the Norfolk, Va Beach area. It's found in many Macy and Nordstroms stores.

Bottom Line: It pays to look fabulous! You want to look good and you're not scared to spend money, Mac is it!

Oprah loves it-Do we love Clarin?

Price: $ 37.00

Good: The Queen of talk Oprah Winfrey says its her favorite and we went looking for it! Clarin foundation looks very smooth on the skin, applies easily and its oil free. Oil free makeup is less likely to clog your pores. Love it!

Bad: PRICEY!!!!!!!!!! Clarin's line of products is geared more towards an older generation (age defying products, etc...). This isn't bad but the campaign doesn't draw you in if you're in your early 20's per say.

Bottom Line: The Queen of talk gives it a yes...were not so sure about that

EYESHADOW ANYONE?
Sheri dishes about: Mac and Shiseido

Shiseido-----HYDRO POWDER EYESHADOW

I have this color and I have yellow undertones. Looks great with black liquid eyeliner on top lid with a lighter brighter color in the crease or alone. The texture is very soft and even customers with oily skin can wear all day without re-applying often. This product has relatively high pigment and is easily removed with alcohol free toner (I recommend Neutrogena's because it doesn't conflict with other cleansers) You can buy online or visit their counter at MACY'S.

The representatives at the counter can schedule a time with you and do your makeup! Also Shiseido has a skincare line, Frangrance and a Line for MEN.

The Company was founded by Arinobu Fukuhara after the Meiji Restoration. Fukuhara was a pharmacist to the Japanese Navy and decided to open the sheiseido pharmacy to improve the quality of pharmaceuticals supplied to public. Today it is one of the most well respected cosmetic lines.

Price- $24

Bad: Isn't as thick as I thought it would be and if you use your fingers to apply your shadows it may get on the black liner and you may have to re-apply the black liner. I would not recommend a pencil liner on the lid.

Good: This color looks good on dark and fair skin tones. I am fair with a yellow undertone and this color is a winner for me. And goes great with a variety of other brand's colors. Including MAC.

M.A.C.

I love MAC! I went to Duke Ellington School of the Fine arts in Washington DC and there was a MAC store down the street from the school in Georgetown. A friend of mine owned Cranberry and Electric Eeel. I went and purchased the same colors and I have been buying MAC eyeshadow for six years now. My Favorite color is GOLDMINE.

Price: $14

GOOD:Lasts all day even with oily skin. All the shadows have High pigment and last a really long time. Also when you finish five containers you can take the five empty containers to a MAC counter and get a free lipstick or you can take the five to a MAC store and get a free shadow or your choice.

BAD:Electric Eeel won't easily wash off. I learned that after I try to remove this makeup my skin still had a greenish blue tint to it. It's even worse when you've worn it all day (12+) hours and then go somewhere and want to change your eyeshadow color. But overall the product is great. MACY'S also has counters for this company, you can go to http://www.maccosmetics.com/ to view all their products. Colors I recommend GOLDMINE, MYTHOLOGY, STARS'N'ROCKETS, AND TRAXX.

Also try- the tinted shea butter lip conditioner. I bought the conditioner three years ago and I have not since bought any other type of lipstick, chapstick or gloss.

Sheri and Dominique's Review on: GREAT LASH MASCARA

Price: $4.79

Sheri: I have been using great lash for years! It's formula lasts a long time. It doesn't dry easily, and it washes off with relative ease. The formula doesn't allow clumping like other formulas. I have tried Cover Girl, Rimmel, Fabulash, and MAC's mascara and MAYBELLINE has definitely NAILED it!

Dominique: What can you say bad about great lash! My mom even uses it. It last long, it's cheap and affordable! It's thick with no clumps and has a built in curve on the brush. It's also hypoallergenic! Since when have you been able to use the same makeup products as your momma!

Running to the Hills

Adding to my monday night television addiction is the hottest show on MTV. Two words: The Hills! http://www.mtv.com/ontv/dyn/the_hills/series.jhtmlCan't get enough of Lauren Conrad and Miss Heidi "I steal people's jobs" Montag! If you watch the Hills you will get that joke.

Heidi just revealed in US weekly that she had plastic Surgery. She said she had a nose job and a breast augmentation! She included her fiance' Pratt into every answer. Check out the interview in this weeks US weekly!

And Justin Bobby...or is it Bobby Justin..or homeboy who wore combat boots at the beach(has to be the funniest line ever from LC). You just can't get enough of J-BOB. My fave new Hills girl is:Elodie. Monday night we will find out if Elodie quits her job because of Heidi....gotta love reality television :"What a diva knows for Sure" says Monday night television is sweet!

It's New York's Finest......

It's definitely a guilty pleasure. She is the quintessential bad example of a Diva. You just can't help to love her!!!Drum roll please.........................................Ms. New York is back and ready to attack.

VH1's "I Love New York" is getting ready for its second season. As much as I should say that I don't like this show....that this show is a negative portrayal of black women and men(probably where Bill O'Reilly gets his quacky notions from) and that this show should be taken off of television..I can't.

It goes against everything I believe and stand for, yet I can't get enough of this show. Look....you watch it, too. But hey, I'm so ready to watch Season 2 and see what my girl New York has in store. Will we get to see her mama at church again? Will we get to see another "Chance" ridden human being that is just ridculously funny and oh so stereotypical at the same time.

I recently saw Tango over the summer at a concert at H.U's convocation center and he has an identical twin brother! Craziness. ...Tango actually looked good in person. I have to admit it, he looked good but his vocabulary was not, "Artists's". Really Tango? Let's just hope season two gives us just as much to dish about.

TYLER PERRY IS BACK.........

I was thoroughly disappointed with Tyler Perry's sitcom debut "House of Payne".
(that show is screaming for a return of Madea).
http://www.tbs.com/ I know for sure that Tyler Perry will win us back with his new movie "Why did I get married?"http://www.tylerperry.com/

Malik Yoba, too fly Janet Jackson, Jill Scott and Tyler Perry (as himself) are starring in the film! The movie hits your theatre's next week on October 12th!

Let's go Tyler Perry....redeem yourself!

Nailah Franklin Teaches Me a Lesson.......

Nailah Franklin had been missing for over a week and informed police that she had been receiving threatening phone messages. Franklin also didn't show up for an important meeting at her job. This prompted Franklin's co-workers to call Franklin's family to inform them that something could be wrong.
Friday, Franklin's body was identified behind an abandoned building. There is an investigation going on as to the cause of her death.

Franklin was 28 years old, a pharmaceutical representative and at the prime of her life.
How could something like this happen? We don't know what happened with Franklin but it prompts me to be a little bit more cautious.

You remember all those sayings that are mama's and grandmama's taught us. We think at times their lessons are outdated or we are smarter than them. You know, like were invincible. I am guilty of thinking that I am invincible at times, too. I think if we just remember those lessons given to us by those who are so wise, it will help us stay in check.

Little Lessons from my mama:

If you have to go out at night, make sure you bring a friend with you..

Just like Franklin did, let someone know if you are being threatened...

Let someone know close to you, who you hang out with.......

(guilty: I don't want my mama knowing everybody I hang with, but I will divulge some names ASAP)

If you leave town, let someone or a family member know you are leaving........

(next time you go out for the weekend with the girls, tell somebody)

"What a diva knows for sure" today is: Let's remember what mama taught us.....

Downtown Hampton is cooking it up!

Let's debate. Who has better seafood? Virginia or Maryland. Who has better soul food? Virginia or ummm...a state further in the deep south. Virginia is not in the deep south for those of you who do not know that (hint:Whoopi Goldberg). O.k. back to the debate.

I don't know if you noticed but Southeastern Virginia is surrounded by water that carries some of the best seafood on the east coast. And being that Virginia has southern characteristics shows that VA packs some soul, too. So, "what a diva knows for sure" today is: you decide for yourself if Hampton,VA knows how to throw down in the kitchen.

Downtown Hampton wants you to come out October the 5th through the 12th and try great dishes from 10 different restaurants. You can try a little bit of soul food at Mary Helens Southern and Creole cuisine or Queens Way Soul Cafe'. Maybe your in the mood for fish and crabcakes at the Old Hampton Seafood Kitchen. Hey, no matter what, you have 7 other great restaurants to choose from, too.

Starting on the 5th of October, you can get a 3 course lunch for $10 or a 3 course dinner for $20. Check outhttp://www.downtownhampton.com/ for more info.
I'm betting on the VA crabcakes.......
